Summary:
The girl in the story shares about her “firsts”, riding a two-wheeler for the first time, picking up a dog’s poop, learning to tie shoes, becoming a first grader, getting a library card, and more. Lesson Objectives: 

1. Students will be more likely to try new things as they discuss their own “firsts.” They will be encouraged to look at such challenges as adventures like the girl did in this story. Teachers can remind students that when something is hard, look at it like an adventure, tell yourself to have fun as you work on it. 

Guiding Questions: 

1. Do you think the girl was courageous to get back on the bike after she crashed several times or do you think it was easy for her because she wasn’t afraid of getting hurt? (Remember she was wearing a helmet for protection, which is what everyone should do when riding a bike)
2. It’s nice to take care of a pet dog, but what was one thing she had to do that was hard? 
3. What helped her feel okay on her first day of school? 
4. What happened when she stole someone’s pencil? 
5. Do you think it took courage to admit she told a lie? Did she think she did the right thing when she admitted her lie? Do you think it’s better to admit it when you tell a lie or try to hide it? Why? 
6. When she was at the library something special happened. What was it? 
7. Do you think she was afraid when she looked down from the cliff before jumping in the water? Does having courage mean you’re not afraid, or does it mean you’re afraid but you’re willing to try something?
